    Problem students

Im having a dispute with my gym owner on how to deal with a problem student.

Ill tell you about some things he has done, and how i delt with with

    1) taught people to open there guard and punch off your back as a way to create space and stand up. When i asked him not to show that stuff he exploaded and yelled at me infront of everyone told me my way wasnt the only way. I called him aside explained why that is wrong and asked him not to do that again

    2) insults all his teammates on facebook. I talked to him about this in person 3 times and then one day he insulted me and I basically treated him like a heckler, i may have been a little mean but it stopped after that.

    3) walks away during drilling for his own water breaks and bathroom and candy crush breaks. I told him he needs to respect his partners money and act serious

    4) randomly tackles people and has hurt 1 persons back. I told him to stop he kinda did

    5) a female student had him in head and armpit and he said "this is really nice why would i ever try and escape your mount". She wouldnt let me say anything to him about that but she felt awful because its sexual harassment, that happened 2 weeks ago but i only found out yesterday and from two people that over heard it.

    6) someone accidentally got him with nonpermenant marker on his face when they were writing on the white board. Like they turned and boom his face was there. He got so made he threatened to punch HER out. I told him if he ever threatened one of my female students again they will need police to stop what im going to do to him, this was today. If your 200lbs you dont threaten 100lb girls or ima kill u.

Ive never kicked someone out before, his behavour has gotten worse and worse. If i talk to him he laughs like im joking

I want him gone because he ruins the atmosphere but my gym owner keeps saying give him another chance

What should i do? I have 15 people classes and everyone else is a delight, teaching them is one of the best parts of my day.

I dont want to fight with my gym owner. I think for the most part i handled it correctly... He comes from a super broken family where he was on his own at 14. So i felt bad for him but now he is 18-19 and still chooses to act that way

No brainer, time to go. You've done plenty. You have a repsonsibility to the safety of your other students. You must take every threat he makes seriously, you cannot ignore his comments. If he follows through on even one of them, you are at fault.

It sounds to me as if your gym owner doesn't want you to walk away from a child in need.
18-19, just a kid in an adult's body.

I hope the best for everyone involved.

Fuck the owner you have to protect your reputation as an instructor and you have a responsibility to your other students/clients.

Yes you are correct his view is that if we kick him out he will just join a gang because he isnt a smart guy.

The gym owner has no solutions so his opinion is null. And if the gym owner is smart, he'll recognize this kid as a liability that could affect income. It's not a tough choice.

I'd say put it all on paper. Confront him one last time. And if he is unwilling to change after being confronted by the facts, end his contract.

Or you don't cut him loose you spend another year or so trying to rehab him only to have to cut him loose anyway or he leaves on his own and you effectively spent a year arming him with superior skills to carry out his violent tendencies. Think loyd Irving.

Hmm.. Well, we have a guy that lived on his own from a young age. He's a great student, one of the best. He doesn't do anything crazy like that. I say..if this has been going on for a long time and you are wore out on trying to correct him, your gym might not be the gym that guy needs. I understand that losing a student sucks if its unnecessary, awesome to have a guy on the payroll, but if he will possibly drive others away AND kill the atmosphere..find a way to boot him out. I don't think you necessarily need to kick him out, maybe just boot him out..if you catch my drift. Have you tried calling him out about the drilling in front of the whole class? There's always one or two that run to get water or constantly check their phone..if the instructor calls them out in front of everyone..a lot of times they stop. He might need to be embarrassed a little. :-/ that's a stinky position to be in there Ryan.
