Washington, D.C., police arrested three men at Georgetown University over the weekend and charged them with illegally manufacturing a controlled substance after authorities found a drug, later determined to be dimethyltryptamine (DMT), was being manufactured in a dorm room.

The men, two students and a guest, were arraigned today. A police spokeswoman said police were directed to a certain room on the ninth floor of Harbin Hall after a student reported a strange odor. Seven people, including several students, were treated for possible effects from exposure to chemicals, but no one was hospitalized.

In an e-mail, Greg Olson, Georgetown's vice president of student affairs, told parents that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency had confirmed that DMT was being made in the dorm room.

"The DEA has informed us that there was never a health risk to students in Harbin, including those on the same floor, beyond those who lived in the room. Hazardous materials experts have now removed all potential contaminants," Olson wrote in the e-mail.

University officials evacuated the dorm's 400 or so other residents but allowed them to return to their rooms around 6:30 in the evening, according to a university spokesperson.

    DMT a Powerful Hallucinogen
According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, DMT is a powerful hallucinogenic drug that is typically smoked, sniffed or injected. It's found naturally in plants and seeds but can also be manufactured synthetically. It's also found in very small amounts in the brains of most mammals, including humans.

It acts by increasing the brain's level of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that influences moods. DMT produces what's called the "businessman's trip" -- a high that lasts for about an hour.

"Serotonin is thought to be the target of a lot of hallucinogens, like LSD, MDMA [ecstasy], PCP and others," said Glen Hanson, professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Utah and former director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Dr. Rick Strassman, who's conducted studies on DMT use in university settings that were approved by the DEA and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, said the high his subjects experienced was very intense. "They had the feeling of being outside their bodies and being in an incredibly visual hallucinatory world," said Strassman, who is also a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and the author of a book on DMT. "The effects began very quickly and peaked wthin two minutes, then they came down."

But he warns that it can also be a dangerous trip.

"It's a profoundly startling and upsetting experience for people who aren't prepared, and even for some people who are," he said.

    DMT Easy to Make
DMT is not very addicting, unlike drugs like methamphetamine. It's also relatively easy to manufacture, according to the DEA.

In addition to the psychedelic high, the drug can have serious physiological consequences, including high blood pressure, agitation, seizures and dizziness, according to the DEA. In very high doses, it can bring on a coma and respiratory arrest.

Regarding long-term use, experts also said there wasn't much research about how harmful long-term use can be, but Hanson suspected it could take its toll on the brain after a while.

"The brain doesn't like to be hit over the head time and time again. If you keep banging on these seronotin systems, one would expect there would be stuff that happens eventually."

    Not Addicting, But Still Illegal
DEA statistics show that between January and June of 2009, law enforcement officials seized 72 items that were later identified as DMT. In 2008, they seized 94 such items, up from 59 in 2007.

DMT is an illegal substance and is considered a schedule one drug, meaning that it's not approved for medical use.

While it makes me a *little* leery (but just a little) I'd add a +1 for that. After reading about some of the research done at Johns Hopkins on religious conviction and psilocybin mushrooms, I find the DMT thing fascinating (yes, I know they are two different compounds). What I most wonder about is really kind of the biggest question of all: Is the chemistry of our brain solely responsible for everything we experience, or is there something "beyond" biology? That is, is there a "mind" integral to but nevertheless separate from the brain or is the "mind" only an emergent property of a very complex organ? I don't know and I'm not sure that anyone CAN know. Does taking DMT simply create a profound visual and emotional experience because of its biochemical action or is it really unlocking something we cannot otherwise ordinarily access? How would you tell the difference? Even if you did an fMRI during a DMT trip that would only show you the biological activity taking place; it doesn't tell you whether that biological activity is solely responsible for the experience. I'm fascinated by the whole thing -- especially that so many people describe similar encounters/experiences. I would love to hear about anyone's experiences or if they know of any published research.

You can extract it from prairie grass called syrian rue (or something like that). Check out www.lycaeum.org. Some army types got busted extracting it from that grass in Southern Alberta. It's all over the place down there so probably Montana and the Dakotas as well.
Be careful though. If you have done LSD and though that that was intense, well maybe you should redefine intense before you try DMT.

Interesting. I didn't know that. For those out there who have tried mushrooms, LSD, and/or DMT what are your thoughts? I might have to chat with a friend of mine at work who's a neurologist and see if he can point me toward some research. It's still pretty incredible how much we really know about the brain and yet how little we really understand.

The first time I did dmt was summer of 97 it was August a week after Tyson bit Holyfields ear hotter than a mother fucker in new york I was 17 I remember i was pissed at my pops cause we got into an argument he was just really on my case at the time. I was hanging out with a couple my boys just mad at the world smoking blunts in the school yard on 58th st and my boy Niall rolls up mad excited like i got it. Roccos like for real you sick fuck im like what the fuck you got hes like dmt its a chemical released in your brain when you die its also found in frogs from the amazon they smoke it off the frogs backs in amsterdam after that explanation i was down. By the way my boy Niall is like a drug encyclopedia he got me into reading this Carlos Casteneda book about a shaman called Don Juan when we were like 15. So I already experimented with shrooms and acid and had a really spiritual trip on shrooms but this dmt seemed like the ultimate. It was pink rocks he made a pipe out of aluminum to smoke it from one by one we took hits i went third and before i blew the smoke out i was just bugging. I didnt hallucinate but i just got hit with a flood of emotion and thoughts and vibrations it was like the pulse of the earth like me Nialls Jamals and Roccos thoughts were one i felt like i needed room i got up and just walked. The trip was only like 15 seconds at most but it felt like an eternity i remembered just finding understanding in why my pops was on my case there was just peace serenity no anger. We all kind of just sat and reflected after it was a profound experience for everybody i can say we all felt that initial overwheming feeling of what the fuck as we blew the smoke out but we all had different experiences i remember Rocco saying he had an out of body experience that he was floating over us watching us the whole time.
