Josh Barnett's "Way of Defeating The Rubber Guard"

I figured you guys would be interested in this. I can see some of these techniques working if you can catch the guy in an off moment. But if you have a sick rubber guard and you're doing everything you should be doing...these will be very low percentage.

Jeff, this was posted on the old website, I'm not sure what Barnett has against rubber guard but you are correct if the guy stays tight in "perfect" mission control and get a good kung fu move if he tries to push that leg down and go over you can get a carni pretty easy. I would like to think this is an older video and Barnett is a little more open minded now, of course testing positive to steroids 3 times may screw with your mind.

Oh, thanks for letting me know, but still I think it's good for discussion. Honestly I'd like to see some more opinions on this. Cause I've had a lot of guys say they can smash my rubber guard and all this and it hasn't worked even once. But this video was released in January I believe, which isn't a lot of time. Josh Barnett shouldn't be trying to teach people techniques based on other techniques which neither him or his students seem to understand that well. In order to bring down any 10th Planet technique you get inside 10th planet, learn the moves first. Still some positions are damned near impossible to escape.

yeah if the guy stays in perfect position i dont see it working too much but atleast the guy was doing mission control correctly i saw one where he was holdin in front of the foot and there was no way any of the passes wouldve worked

I think that a way to beat the rubber guard would be good for 10th planet because that would mean that bjj is evolving. And if bjj is evolving then naturally 10th planet would evolve as well to be able to beat the move that can beat the rubber guard. In jiujitsu nothing is the perfect move. There should be a way out of everything so I think that this is good.

I love how he's portraying that the rubber guard consists only of mission control and gogo/loco platas.
    There's always gonna be haters.

Josh doesn't really love the guard in general. Those catch guys jokingly refer to the closed guard as "the whore hold" and "the saturday night ride".

I like at 5:24 or so, he is grabbing the foot. I'm pretty sure we train subs off of that defense, or you could very easily just rotate over into an omoplata.
