Yeah, I thought the accent was funny as well. I've never seen him that laid back before either. He has always been over the top intense. I've seen several guys slowly acquire Brazilian accents tho. Its weird and he's def a little weird, but he's for real on the mats.

Yeah he's american but he lived in brazil for several years, came back and opened an academy in Florida and has moved back and is living in Brazil again for the past year and a half. He's fluent in portuguese and while living in Brazil only speaks that and no english so I think thats where the accent comes in. The pussification video is when he was back in the states for over a year.

I'm sure he is legit on the mats and I don't know him personally. He also beat Marcelo Garcia which is fucking incredible. But, it is kinda weird that he is willing to fake an accent. That makes it seem like he is trying to be a part of a club. When he talks about the importance of the gi, it makes me feel like he has a dog in the race (i.e. fitting in with the people who's accent he is faking). Obviously I don't know him personally but I think it is a good instinct to use circumstantial evidence of a persons level of bias when he is presumed to have authority (i.e. because he is an accomplished competitor). It certainly doesn't mean you can't learn from him. I really value people who are able to speak the truth, regardless of outside influences. When somebody seems willing to drink somebody else's kool-aid, it kind makes me proceed cautiously.
