Sergio is pretty old school, so much that his game looks different from most jiu jitsu guys. Scotty has a new tshirt from OTM that says, "The Old School is the New New School". I thought of Sergio when I saw it. He was one of the first people to have a "climbing" guard vs the traditional closed guard. The way he can control your posture from guard is amazing. That and the stuff he can hit from angles I've never seen anyone use amazes me. We have a lot of blackbelts come visit and feel like white belts with some of the stuff Sergio teaches. I think he's the best kept secret in the world. I'm obviously biased as I'm his student but i talk to the best guys in the world all the time for my podcast and they almost all respect his technique.
We don't have too many guys that play RG and Sergio doesn't teach it. That said, I doubt he'd stop someone from using it. He's a pretty pragmatic guy. If you can make something work consistently then he's all for it. Similar to Marcelo's style Sergio doesn't teach a lot of fancy grips or grip dependent techniques. The majority of his technique can be used gi, nogi and MMA. So in that regard 10Planet students would fit right in. That said our gi classes are always double to triple the size of our nogi. So it's not uncommon to come to nogi and get the equivalent to a semi-private lesson.
Gray,
I'm still dealing with injuries so I'm not rolling right now, just leading a few classes every week. Would love to get a chance to roll once I'm back on the mat though. I'm thinking of doing an annual or semiannual open mat for charity. When our blackbelt Dave passed away doing that rescue it was amazing to see the entire Vegas community come together. I think we can probably do that once a year or so for various good causes.
Also, my bad for leaving Sonny out. He's another great guy. His team killed it this past weekend. I think 3/4 of them took home some type of medal. Not bad for such a new school.
