obviously, don't get caught in it, yes. but that means you have to play your RDLR against a standing opponent in a less than perfect way. it's a trade off. and it's a trade off that most people don't know they need to make. so, you turn their foot into dust and they learn the lesson.
as far as countering once you are there, if you watch the comp video i posted of victor estima vs clark gracie, you'll see that estima was looking for it early, but gracie continually went inverted to relieve the pressure. when he finally got stuck it was from estima's kneeling position (remember in the video how i said it was tighter but harder to land), and estima jumped into a leg entanglement/guard sorta position to make the kill.
