My advice is to go 50/50 when you attack with the ankle lock. You'll avoid it completly and its comp friendly.
If its locked in, I sit up and hand fight to stay on top and hand fight, or if I fall to the side, sit up and underhook the elbow to block his squeeze. If I am close enough, I look for the darce or ninja choke to force him to let it go or I tap him. Confused?
1) Never attack the leg they way they do, its horrible.
2) Use you free foot to block behind your own heel to prevent any further pressure, weather the storm untill they release the deep hook than you can bail out rather easily, and come up on top, usually into an doubleunder pass.

First one the leg is running in the same direction as the attackers center line and requires leg curls(The Grinder), the 2nd one is rotated 90 degrees (Turkey Wrap style) and requires the legs to be stretched.
