I hate traditional half guard in MMA
Probably close minded on my part, but it really does pain me to watch it happen. I'm sitting here watching Mir vs Overeem and I want to scream at the tv.
IMO, for some it may be just a reaction thing. Not even thinking. I mean for me, I drill the living hell out of lock down but there is still times were on a wild scramble, I throw on traditional. Trust me, I know I know, I should burn in no gi hell for breaking the commandment, thou shalt not use traditional half guard. But it happens from time to time.
Edit* I are can't spell good

Yeah I mean fuck, what does Frank Mir know? Frank Mir is an World Championship open class champion and 6th degree black belt in BJJ. So, who knows. It's not like he was World Champ of a big fighting organization. Let those words fly at the TV man! Tell him what's up.
Ow i don't know. I think "traditional half guard" gives you the opportunity to do mini stomps to take their base out from under them and you can still find the normal advantages you can get from that position. Also lets not forget that going into "traditional" half guard can throw off another 10th planet ronin by making them think on a base level you are a noob or pretender, if they don't know you.
There is no right or wrong way in jiu jitsu my friends, there are only the easy or hard way. There is a time for everything and plenty of uses for traditional half. I use it to get to a rather hasty swinging dog fight often.
Half guard bottom gets avoided by a lot of fighters and not really stressed by a lot of instructors. Mostly get back to guard or stand up
Seems like most of the time people come across 10PJJ, they either avoid it because so many instructors talk down rubber guard or try to just use 1 or 2 techniques not really wanting to put the time into learning a system of 1 position

I agree. Shelly, you're right it CAN be used in the chess match, but whenever I watch mma jj traditional half isn't used for much at all. Like last night, I didn't see one half guard demonstration that didn't end up with the bottom half getting their face pounded.

Very good point about the mini stomps. I myself am not too good with the mini stomp yet but I have seem how useful they can be. And I actually do use traditionsl time to time when I roll with a 10thplanet player solely to bounce between the two guards so it's not easy to predict what's coking next. I've actually gone as far as switching my half guards 2-3 times while never even leaving half guard.
Man I'm glad to see this thread...I felt like the half guard used in last nights UFC gave bjj a bad name. I feel like so much could be gained from using the lockdown to perfect double under hooks for sweeps and avoiding shots. Also from quarter guard, if guys would hook across the back to the far lat muscle and use the other hand to control the bicep until they could get the underhook, they could be so much more effective
