Take small bites, practice slowly, review what you did a month ago, tap quickly, tap often, never turn down mat time.

Work on escapes like jail break, escape from Guantanamo, elbow escape, b smith, etc and submission defense, RNC, triangle, arm bar, etc since you'll probably be bad positions often. I think lockdown is the best 10th planet specific position to work on first.

I started "grappling" in 1997 in a catch wrestling club in Atherton , uk; although I wanted to train in bjj but at the time they wasn't any around here only a few in the uk. With my work I have travelled around Europe and I have been lucky to train a various BJJ academies, but because I have never stayed in one place for to long I have never been ranked. I have also trained in judo when there hasn't been a bjj club.
watching the MTS and listening to EB has made me want to learn this system I have got the same feeling of excitement like the first time I was introduced to grappling and BJJ.
    Why disillusioned?

My school is an orthodox BJJ school for the most part. We do pretty well in tournaments and the blue belts and purple belts I spar with have a lot of legit skills to pass to me that I'm not going to get by watching videos online. Oh, sometimes the white belts I spare with curse when I get my lockdown in or drown when I manage to get to twister side control and that's fun, but for the most part, I'm getting cut to pieces on fundamentals. I can't *get* my lockdown because their pass skills are so threatening. I can't *get* twister side because they're destroying my posture too fast.

Forgive me from reading in to the disillusioned bit: don't sell yourself short on the training aspect. Eddie et al can correct me, but I can't imagine that your BJJ career will truly thrive unless you train with legit instruction and make that your solid foundation and *supplement* that with MTS / books. It's all about reps right?

I know it sounds like an over exaggeration, but simply learning to stay on your side and protect yourself is one of the most basic and important concepts you can have. I'm working out a video on this today, actually
please post when you're done. i'm sure other white belts can attest to this, but i really need to work on my side control defense big time.

for me, lock down is much easier to get and maintain than twister side. fuck, i feel like my twister side control is such garbage.
