    Hatred of the Gi

Train the Gi twice a week cause I've no other NoGi classes I could take to fill my grappling void on those days and I can't get graded NoGi anywhere in Ireland as far as I know.

Any tips to help me keep my hatred at bay, I think guard areas especially just irritate me cause a lot (not open guard) cause they keep me from passing cause a shitty little sleeve or collar grip

Any tips for getting dominant grip passes for gi would be deeply appreciated!

You have to slow down and take the time to address the grips. Do a two on one grip break where you grab his/her wrist and drive it up and away from your collar. Sleeve grips are a little more annoying, grab the wrist with the free hand and push away while pulling with the hand that is trapped.

This may go without saying but try not to give them any grips to begin with, attack and pass quickly, if they get the grips, slow down and address.

I had to learn how to stand up it is harder to be manipulated once you stand even if they maintain closed guard on you, they are using the grips just to stop from falling to the ground.

But I feel your pain my dude, grips are essential in gi (knowing to counter maintain or prevent).

    Just my humble opinion.

Also, Knee slice pass. that shit works likes a charm, a knee up the ass makes the grips a little less important.

Roll in a gi with only using nogi moves. Basically just never grabbing the gi.

I'm sure someone mentioned this already but I didn't read any comments yet..

You still have to address the grips at least by not allowing them. Once you get inside 10p is perfectly effective in gi.

Its a little vice of mine, that I love proving this. You know the gi guys that skip all the no i classes and brackets ij tournies? Im more proud of those tournie victories when I'm exausted and they show up fresh, then you beat them at their own game with 10p. Because at the end of the day its all just grappling. Grips are just far more consequential in gi but hooks are equally as effective in both.

Any time you are grappling against someone who can beat or challenge you, progression is made. I say embrace the situation. Cause like you said, ain't nobody else rollin.

That's a big part of the reason the gi game is boring to me, too much yanking and pulling the gi and then you gotta break these god damn annoying grips, then repeat, repeat repeat #thankgod4nogi

Man I'm getting annoyed just talking about it lol...The grips really are infuriating at times lol, more so tonight, getting hit by crazy grips like where guy was baseball gripping the tail of my gi top....that shit was IMPOSSIBLE to break!

I'll rarely ever use Gi specific techniques when I'm rolling....only ever use moves that I can use seamlessly with both.

Any more passing tips, or even tips for maintaining dominant grips while in someone's guard

Just keep at it. At least you are getting to roll. Maybe try more open guard passes? Also, it may seem counter-intuitive, but maybe consede the sweep and work on your bottom game/ defense for that roll? There is more than one way to have a successful rolling session.

You just have to address the grips when they get them and prevent them as much a possible.
Its annoying but you get used to it.

Lovato's Guard Passing dvd is excellent.
I have them both, gi and nogi, I have watched and worked through the gi set. He covers grip breaks and his passing system is not reliant on gi grips so with very minor alterations you can go nogi with it.

I have done that a few times when I just can't get past their guard lol
