To use the earlier example of email, that was contained to a smaller community for a long time until enough infrastructure was created to attract enough users to create a tipping point. I remember a conversation with my dad about email where he asked, "why would anyone use a computer when you can send anything with a stamp?"
Personally, I've got some Bitcoin because I wanted to see how it worked when I wrote an article about it. It's worth about the same as I paid for it initially and having it allowed me to explore the functions of it practically, instead of just theoretically. Kind of like the difference between learning BJJ moves on youtube and practicing them on the mat.
If anything, learning about Bitcoin forced me to learn more about finance in general and I've made some way less sexy non-crypto investments because of that. It's fun stuff to think about.
