    Give me back my lockdown

Yesterday we had a half guard passing drill at our gym. I was doing a great job pissing people off with the lockdown as usual. Until yesterday nobody knew how to do this badass move and definitely NOBODY could get out of it. I could make people suffer for as long as i wanted by keeping them locked in half guard (especially if my opponent is bigger than me. It takes more time to crawl from under him). So our instructor finally took some time to explain couple of moves to counter lockdown. Basically this video shows the trick http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WSE0rwHNWw. I can't seem to figure out how to "counter" this counter...how do you maintain the lockdown if it's that easy to escape?

P.S. got my first twister yesterday!!

Its not easy to escape the lock down thats why I like it. If people are blowing through your lockdown your doing something wrong. If your controling there base like your suppose to theres no reason you cant sweep before they break your lockdown. Granted if your going up against some really good grapplers the may have some counters for it but theres a counter for everything and a counter for every counter LOL

I may be new at this, but it looks like that guy's "lockdown" is awfully high on the instructos leg. If you're actually locking someone down and executing the calf-cutter, how in God's name are they gonna raise their leg without bringing yours with them? I may be wrong here, and I haven't tried this counter or tried to counter the counter yet, but it looks to me that if you squeeze the lockdown, his foot's never gonna get high enough that he can easily place it outside of your own.

Not the answer you want to hear (nor I) but you should be very active with the lockdown and working to sweep before your opponent can try anything. Half guard of any variety isn't a position to chill out in. Get whipping as soon as you get the lockdown.

Everybody at my gym knows how to slip their leg out of the lockdown now. All that's changed is that I've gotten better at recapturing the lockdown. That in itself, is a little mini battle within the position... losing and regaining the grapevine on the lockdown. Considering that you've turned what many people consider a dominant top position, into a game of footsies, it's still a promising scenario since they are on the defense.

One trick that works for me sometimes is to capture their leg with a reverse lockdown. Out of muscle memory they'll try to slip out the same direction that they usually do, which won't work because your lockdown is reversed. Then once they give up trying to slip it, I extend their leg and switch back to a regular lockdown working back for the sweep.

no way you can pull off what Ari does in the video if the lockdown is tight as hell. But if someone gets their foot out like that you can try a stomp with ur outside foot

Look, its all about either having an over/under or double under hooks to control what he does. Just like the buttocks compressor, if you control him and stop him from working his way down your body he cant do it. I have a guy in my gym that almost caught me once that indian trap crap, from then on I learned I better have good control of his posture. Because of him my over/under hooks and double under hooks became that much better. Guess bottom line in what Im tryin to say is, dont give him the chance to make space, control, control, and control. White Widow bit me about 20 min ago, so dont know how much this makes sense. But hope it helps
