Hey guys, what's up? My student, Shawn Murphy's incident from last night (on another thread) reminded me of what happened to me many years ago.
So, I go to this guy's Jiu Jitsu school in Montreal, I roll with him. I roll in a very respectful manner with everyone, btw. He tries to pull guard on me, I pass VERY easily. He tries several times to put me in guard, doesn't work. Then he tries to convince me to go for a submission. I very respectfully tell him that I didn't see any openings and that I like to be patient. Right after I said that, he goes BALLS OUT! He's huffing and puffing and trying his best to put me in his guard. Doesn't even come close. Then he calls "time!" meaning we're supposed to switch to the next guy to roll with. I get up and walk over to the next guy, then he gets up right away and starts SCREAMING at me. The weird thing was what came out of his mouth. His words were, "People always try to challenge my teacher....NOBODY beats my teacher! NOBODY!" He yelled the SAME THING over and over again for maybe 2 minutes. My mouth was literally hanging open in disbelief. I couldn't believe this guy was screaming at me. On top of that, I didn't know what he was yelling about. After a couple of minutes of being yelled at, it finally clicked that he was angry from what just happened. I didn't lose my cool. I kinda apologized for the misunderstanding and needless to say, I never went back there. But I do run into the guy once in a while, since we both have Jiu Jitsu schools in Montreal.
When I'm not injured, I roll with everyone that walks into my school. You have all kinds of strong guys trying to smash you, etc. I can't imagine me yelling at someone for passing and holding side control on me.
