I don't think you ought to be able to earn rank this way, but that's absolutely the only criticism I have of their program. I think it's excellent. Their Gracie Combatives set is probably the best instructional set ever put together.

Yeah I think his major criticism isn't just the online instruction. I think his issue is ranking guys based on online instruction. I can't say much about it because I haven't watched their videos, but I think it's borderline irresponsible to have a guy thinking they are on a blue belt level if they haven't even rolled live with a legit instructor. It's possible that there are delusional guys out there thinking they can whoop ass that might get stomped out in a bar fight. But I'm just theorizing.

After all the recent criticism the Gracie University received, apparently they've decided to change their promotion process.
If I understood well, now you have to go through a live evaluation at a Gracie Certified Training Center to be awarded an official belt.

Whereas before you could get your blue belt via a video evaluation without ever visiting a Gracie Center, or any Jiu-Jitsu school for that matter, you now have to test in person, in front of an authorised evaluator.

Yeah, I didn't really get the technical blue belt thing either. It seems like a step back after a small step in the right direction.

It is very comprehensive for lower belts and people with problems learning positions, i must agree with that.

Not trying to piss Wancarlos off here , but I happen to know that you don't spar as such during the Combatives evaluation (not sure about higher belts' tests though...)

It's mostly technique demo and what they call a 5-minute Fight Simulation, where you have to respond to your "partner's" actions with the corresponding Combatives techniques. It's not really sparring as your partner is supposed to simulate an untrained opponent which doesn't know any Jiu-Jitsu, in a street fight.
