Curiousity about 10th Planet Academy rankings

If I earn my blue (or purple, brown or black) belt at a 10th Planet Academy and then go to compete at an IBJJF competition, will they recognize my rank?

Of course they will.. How is getting rank at a 10th planet any different from getting rank at a Gracie school?

Yep, However to go in under the 10th Planet Association you have to go under Denny Prokopos. So unless you're adverse to doing that you'll be fine

They'll honor your 10th planet belt rank, but be sure to follow their time requirements. I've heard stories about guy's not being allowed to compete because they were advanced too quickly.

Example: You compete as a white belt and you're in their records. You're a stud and come back as a purple belt 1 1/2 years later. They'll be dicks about it and say you're not qualified to compete a week prior to competition day.

The only oddball case that I know of was when Matt Horwich competed as a blue belt during the San Diego 2012 Abu Dhabi Pro Trials.

Indeed, that's what I'm trying to ascertain.

I had assumed that rank under Eddie Bravo didn't count "in the gi" despite the fact that he's a third degree black belt "in the gi."

I'm really happy to hear that it's the same thing. The IBJJF can complain all they want if Matt Horwich or BJ Penn get promoted too quickly, they don't have the right (in my mind) to tell you that you're not a real <fill in the blank> belt.

The ibjjf is going down the tubes bro, just go compete at any other tourney of the same prestige (gq, naga, 5, world pro etc) the ibjjf is like a big corporation that tries to nickel and dime you every chance they get.

Also, I think nathan orchard posted a while ago about wearing your rank in gi specific gyms/in gi tourneys, dont quote me on it, but I think he brought up some good points on respecting the subtle differences between the systems.
