    Eddie's "sit"

I was just wondering what the "sitting" strategy eddie uses is. Like you notice he always starts his matches in that signature sitting position.. What is the strategy involved there? I notice a lot of times it looks like he pulls himself into lockdown position with it.. but other times it looks like he doesnt mind letting someone just start by dropping into side control and he'll just work his way to lockdown or full/rubber guard. So i was just wondering if there was strategy behind it.. or specific things he likes to look for from there.. or if its just a way to get the guy on him so they can get to grappling.

I believe it's just the "butt-scoot" position... just a way to start the roll without fighting for top position. I've heard Eddie talk about not liking to fight for top position from the start when rolling, but he'd rather butt-scoot and pull half guard or something and work to sweep.

by "sitting" your opponent can not score points for a takedown.

I'd guess it's all of the above combined. I know I start in the same position, as like Eddie, I really don't see the need to try to "overwhelm" your opponent when starting on your knees. Matches, fights, etc. don't start on your knees, but you can concentrate on takedowns at a later time. Lately, I've been using it as a gateway position to butterfly guard, X-Guard (only made it that far once so far...), and in the Gi, Spider Guard. Check out Marcelo Garcia's book on the X-Guard and you'll see what you can do from that position.... I'll get there one day!

You can do it after contact in most tournaments that don't allow it. So if you tie up or something you can drop in and attack the legs.
