Had an issue with the Carni this weekend

I ended up going to a Pedro Sauer affiliate when I went back to Utah this weekend so I was wearing a gi. I rolled with a dude about twice my size, I hit the Carni on him, but couldn't finish because he held my belt behind my back. I know there are more gi players than anyone wants to admit on here. So has anyone else had this issue? What did you do? Any good counters?

Here's what I meant to discuss on Facebook, the only way I see him grabbing your belt is if he turned his arm around in the carni. If that's what happened, I still say failed carni > Ronda swim> Spider Web.

Not sure if it would help, but next time maybe feint a sweep into him and if he posts out hit the carni. If not carry on rolling him on his back for a more dominant position? I'm just a white belt so I'm most likely talking out of my butt. But if his arm is holding onto to your belt he has to either post out or get swept. But again I'm only guessing plus might not work as he's bigger

His hand was inside the belt with the thumb out, guess I don't know the path well enough to envision getting him to his back without possibly giving up side control because I'm not trapping with the free leg.

To swim move, you would have to unhook the leg that prevents the pass, then swim move like normal, but instead of landing in spiderweb, try to land in a monoplata. I remember Denny demo-ing that move in one of the MTS episodes a couple years back.l

Grabbing the belt prevents you from hitting the carni, but I think the mono would twist the arm in such a way that you'll either get a tap, or he'll have to leg go of the belt to alleviate pressure, and you can still attack the sub.

EDIT: I've never been in the position, so I'm just imagining it would work. Can't say it actually will work for sure.

New to the gi and Ive been stuck here also once or twice. My instructor did this to me to defend. Ended up stalemating until the round ended. Next time I remember Ill ask him what he would do to break the arm free or attack else where. Thinking about it now, there is probably a collar choke hidden in there some where.
