Hmm, not sure that I've ever done that in a grappling match, but I've done it in all my MMA fights. Not trash talk, but funny stuff.

if im rolling with someone i know well i joke with them all the time, might give beginners advice as we are rolling too.

My favorite is Matt Horwich. He is ceaselessly mumbling during rolls, and it is something between self-pep-talk and narration. "Ok, ok, gotta pass, gotta pass, watch the underhook, don't let him underhook... SHIT! He got the underhook! Ok, hustle, hustle, hustle..."
It amuses the hell out of me, but some people are really annoyed and claim it throws off their game.

I'm not good enough to be talking during a roll. People usually think then speak, or in my case, I speak then I think.
There's no way I'm 3 steps ahead of the guy when I'm telling him how nice that far-side attempt was.."Blame the IBJJF when, in 30 years you see an academy that nails the phrase, "A Red belt is a Junior black belt that hasn't died yet" on the far wall."

Jamie Webster used to get me in a choke and he would turn in to the guy from The Green Mile:
"Now just be so still and so quiet."
