Don't do nogi? Don't want to learn 10P? You better!

So it is no secret I mainly train in the gi (please don't stop reading!), but I am a HUGE fan of 10th Planet and love the system.

Well, tonight while rolling I went into my partners half guard and boom I felt something familiar...he had me in the lock down. Now I remained calm...I know how deadly this can be, but I remained calm. I saw him trying to turn out for an electric chair or a deep half, but he wasn't whipping up. So I waited and watched. Now, I remember, I think it was in the "Mastering the Rubber Guard" DVD when Eddie talks about Jason Miller coming in and hitting everyone with d'arce chokes when doing the lock down? Well, I could be wrong, but I remember Eddie saying it or reading about him saying it either way...I waited and boom...he went for it and I countered with the choke. It worked to. I got it, got the tap and then got the question about what I did etc. All of which I happily explained.

What's the point of my long winded story? The point is even if you don't train in 10th Planet you better learn it because chances are one day, at some point some nasty Nibiru warrior is going to be across the mat from you and he's going to use it on you. One thing that I know is, 10th Planet followers watch and learn other paths, other ways. They give it respect, but other schools, man they don't give 10th Planet the respect it deserves and when that happens...those people lose matches.

I dig the system, I dig what Eddie does and I dig the coolness on this board. Thanks to you all for always sharing what you learn and what works and thanks to you all for helping me out of a tight spot today.

You shoulda taught him how to position his head and arms correctly then.

You have, in my opinion, the correct attitude for this sport, O2B; thanks for sharing. If Royler had even spent a few hours learning the electric chair, that Metamoris match would have been dramatically different. As for countering the lockdown, I've always had more success with the guillotine, but most advanced lockdowners will make any choke difficult. Mayhem was a special case; he could choke out a rhinoceros. If you roll with him, you cannot let him touch your head from any position. He'll slap on a rear-naked grip and squeeze your skull into tiny fragments à la Game of Thrones. I seriously think he tapped me out from mount like that once. As in, I was in mount on him.

I've never had an issue doing 10th Planet tech in a gi. Actually, more times than not, it was even tighter.

I guess my title was a little off, we were wearing a gi. The idea was more about being open to new stuff and not being closed because if you are then the things you turn a blind eye to might actually get you. Sometimes though I have noticed that you gotta fight a bit more in the gi. Since others can stop and block you with the sleeves and collars, but that is the nature of the beast. You gotta adapt.

"You shoulda taught him how to position his head and arms correctly then."

I didn't work with him on head and hand position, but I did work with him on the whip-up. He did not do that at all. He was happy to learn and I was happy to teach a little (even though I don't have the best whip-up in the game). I really like my school because it is so open. Our trainers are great and their idea seems to be, if it works then it works and we want to learn it...no matter where it comes from.

Thank you that means a lot.
