You just have to work on getting the angle and maybe try a bit higher guard. It makes it easier to pull RG and get foot in the hip, but flexibility and leg dexterity are really important in guard game. I sometimes just get someone in my guard and have them resist about 80% and try to break them down and work the RG path all the way through.

But i have found once you pull rubber guard, it is extremely hard to hip out as you have no mechanism to hip out to the side where you are trapping his arm. To me it seems you have to hip out when breaking them down. I personally wouldn't mind a few tips and tricks in order to hip out while breaking them down.

he hips out and turns on his side and it seems to me as if this creates a lot of space for the foot on the hip

If they are pinning my hips down I usually have to hip out during over hook guard and then transition to rubber guard once my hip is out. If you have a weak squeeze, hipping out by pushing off of their hip with your free leg, can sometimes create an opening for a pass if you flare out your knee too wide and allow their arm to get inside.

I'll usually use one of a few techniques to get my hip outside... I sometimes put my left leg on the mat and hip out during the posture break, driving off of my left foot and pulling them down to my right side landing in a sort of crooked broken posture and getting the free New York. Or I obtain the overhook with my left arm by putting my left leg on the mat, push off the mat, and hip out then turning my overhook into a New York once I've established my angle. Lastly, if their wrestling is weak I can hip out while in New York by pushing off of their hip with my free leg, the whole time trying to squeeze the crap out of them with my right knee and left leg curl.

Get good at getting your hip out though, that element is crucial to any guard attack and it's much more beneficial to establish an outside hip angle before the attack rather than just trying to hit the hip angle and the submission attack at the same time.
