Training methods outside of the gym

    Whats up, guys?
I'm just curious about different peoples training methods. I mean the type of training and study you do OUT of the gym. I have a notebook where I write down different things I liked from class AND techniques I've seen online that I want to try out. If its a youtube clip I'm looking at and I don't have my notebook around, I'll take a quick video of it on my phone to look at later. I'm also lucky because my sisters boyfriend trains jiu jitsu with me and he loves 10th Planet too so if either of us finds a technique we want to try out we'll just try it out in the house or set up mats, stick mastering the system on the TV or go up to the gym a bit early and try some stuff out! I also contribute my decent rear naked defense to "Couch jitsu" which usually happens while watching TV with some other guys from the gym who will sneak up on you every chance they get to try get that choke, haha!

I watch tonnes of guys just rolling or competing on youtube Sometimes watch over some old clips of me training or comp footage. Plan on writing out my go to moves from different positions aswell to see how many options I have from each position and where I'm weak.

For me, the best training method inside and outside of the gym is to not waste time.

Outside the gym, take care of everything you have to so you can get to the gym as often as you can. Much easier to do if you are single, but not impossible if you have a family, you just have to make sure you are all on the same page. On your days off from work, do whatever chores/errands you have to so you can get some drilling in with another person if you have the option to get into the gym early/stay late. When I'm able to add supplemental training and conditioning (sprints, kettlebells, pull-ups, calisthenics, yoga, etc) I make sure to do them as early as possible and get finished with it as quickly as possible. And I never push it so hard that I'll be unable to recover enough to train jiu jitsu later that day, so if I have to cut something out from my training that day, jiu jitsu is going to be the last thing on that list.

All thats for your days off. On days you have to work, things may get a little more complicated. If your workplace is near your gym, and you can get people to meet you there in the wee hours of the morning, there is no better way to start your day than with jiu jitsu. I work 12 hour shifts 3 days a week, and nothing puts me in a better mood than knowing that even if I can't train after work, I've already put some quality reps in before work. If thats not an option, do whatever you can during your work day. If you can work on your flexibility during your work day, work you on your flexibility. If you have a few minutes down time, work on a stretch that is lacking. In my opinion, putting in 10-15 minutes stretching throughout the day everyday gives me better results than stretching for 60 minutes on day a week. In ARG, Eddie talked about how Denny would practive his kung-fu move during his school lectures: people may have looked at him like he's crazy, but I know for a fact it was worth it.

Inside the gym, take full advantage of the time you have to train, especially if you've made efforts to get there to be able to spend extra time there that day. If your goal is to train to get better, you better train. Sam Davis told me over the weekend that, to him, putting in dead reps on techniques can be soul crushing while your doing it, but pays off big time down the road.
