One thing I try to concentrate on is not keeping the lockdown held for too long. I'm not sure whether or not it is the case for everyone, but for me the moment I lock it on I'm going to be extending my legs and then whipping up or down. I see it as a trigger, the second I get it I want to be making my way to another position. The problem with the lockdown is also its benefit: you are stopping your opponent doing anything. That is great in one aspect, your opponent is stuck, but it is negative in another: your opponent is stuck; all they have to concentrate on is getting unstuck and that means fighting the means that you've made them stuck. If you hang out in any position long enough the person fighting to get out will get out.
My path (as most peoples will be) is: Lockdown, instantly extend the leg to take away their base, whip up
That path should be as quick and seamless as possible. At each point you freeze your opponent has a chance to disrupt your path and force you to start it all over again. Remember, if you are in half guard bottom you are vulnerable. If you concede head arm control to your opponent there is a good chance you are getting tapped out or passed (Eddie talks about this on MTS: he says in MMA especially if someone locks Head Arm on you then it should be over), so you really wanna be getting the heck outta there.
