Hey DC, There are some basics: Non Black Belts moon heads may only promote to blue belt (they can make recommendations to eddie for higher ranks) As far as belt levels . It varys from instructor to instructor. Here are the "Standard Requirements and Guidelines " that I use with my students:
Ranking is based on 6 categories:
1) Knowledge of the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu System and ability to demonstrate its skill sets. Student must know and be able to demonstrate all the 10th Planet warm ups for Blue Belt.
2) Ability to apply 10th Planet techniques against a resistant opponent in rolling and in competition.
3) Your ability to "HANG" with my and other belted students for the rank you're trying to obtain (If you're ranking for blue belt, you have to be able to hang with other blue belts). You don't have to compete, however there's no better way to show your skills.
4) Time in grade. General length of time to obtain blue belt would be 2-3 years, however if you compete and smash opponents with the system it will definitely make an impact and reduce the time in grade.
5) Face time, whether you bring me out for seminars, go to other seminars that I'm teaching or come train at my Academy I need to see you train in person.
6) Loyalty : You need to represent the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu System, and be loyal to your team and coaches.
