wearing 10p in competition as a non 10p

As a Ronin in general, I train at a few diff schools and none of them have ever pressured me or said they felt dissed if I didnt rep their gear. All my tourney gear the first few years was a UA rashguard and shorts with the 10thpjj patch on it, and this year I started wearing the 10thpjj rash too (one of the schools I train at the instructor even helped coach me, and he has never pressured me to purchase his gear either).


I think it varies from case to case, you need to use your judgment and also do other things to help promote some of the places you visit as well.

I train at a Marcelo Garcia affiliate. All of the guys are 100% loyal to Marcelo. However, they know how loyal I am to 10P; I always wear my 10P rash guards and my whole game is based around 10P techniques. They even have no issue with me competing in my 10P stuff. The only things they've ever asked of me are to give credit and props to our gym and learn their game that they're teaching me. So I can be completely decked out in 10P stuff, use only 10P techniques, and flash the gang sign all I want in competition; all I have to do is say that my gym is "Underground Jiu Jitsu" when rregistering. Some comps actually ask what gym you train at and what team you're on, so I usually say I train at Underground but my team is 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu.

Probably doesn't help you too much, but I figured I'd share my experience and let you know that there are a lot of great, open minded jiu jitsu schools out there.

Right now, my gym attire is my 10th planet gear. In the near future when I finally feel ready to compete, I would want to wear the BTT rashguard with 10th P shorts and tights. But when I come to that bridge, if there's any sort of political reason why I couldn't, I'd gladly wear my BTT rash only for that tourney.

I feel like not repping the team you sweat with, and the instructor who put in work to help you...it's kind of a slap in the face. So out of respect, I'll rep the team. I'm a fiercely loyal dude and BTT is a great school. I'd be honored to rep BTT.


But then I'll make plans to see if Coach Zog would be OK with me competing alongside the guys at 10th P Rochester. Because I'm always going to be loyal to 10th Planet Rochester as well. Either way, I plan on repping 10th in a tourney like it's one of my low hanging bucket list items. I'm weird like that.

Promote my team over an affiliation or alternate system. Wear what I please, when I please. Desire for my gym to succeed, sporting another outfits gear is possibly determiental and simply isn't on the table as an option.

i'm leaning towards this idea. i think the bonds formed from training and competing with your partners is paramount (assuming you're benefiting from your training, with the exception being everyone else is on a different skill level or your personalities clash)

hypothetically, if you had a training partner at your gym and someone here on this forum (similar level and you would consider yourself to be in good standing with each) who both wanted you in their corner for support for a fight/tournament, who would you go with?

I would always corner my own teammate, although, hypothetically, I may personally want you to win, I would also want my training partner to do well and rep 10P Glasgow as hard as they could.

Good thing I had the tights hidden by shorts cuz it was embarrassing. I lost the matches by submission ankle lock and guillotine in less than a minute I think, I hisitated too much because I knew he was better than me standing and he was fucking low at the beginning so I was surprised. I thought by avoiding his guard it would be safer but instead we were playing 50 5o which I never play and ankle locked the shit out of me, ankle popped but it's not that bad. All that for like 2 minutes 70 dollars plus 52 $ of gas money lol, I don't think I would have done much better if I wasn't on vacation 2 and half weeks ago like I said, he was good.

The second match I was more aggressive at the beginning he was backing off (and getting out if bonds fuck that's annoying) then I forget and eventually I ended up sweeping him off my ass ( I think u can call it sweeping or maybe tripping? It's the basic one, you ll see next week.) he falls on his ass I got into his guard somehow I don't remember, he try's to underhook my arm I limp arm it back or whatever, he guillotines me than the break it up put us in the middle and guillotines the shit out of me, I panicked forgetting the better way to pass the guillotine compared to what i used to do, I guess it's better but anyways, he had a butterfly hook on his left foot so I forgot which side to lay on ( I can't believe I forgot..) so I just hold my hands and started thinking what to do, even listening for my coaches/teammates couldn't hear anything. Then I waiting awhile , felt like forever, than tapped out. I was going to pass on the wrong side too, I don't know what I was thinking, maybe it's because I'm used of getting guillotined on the other side but whatever.

Did you have fun? Did you learn something? If you had an imaginary match against the fighter you were before the tournament, would you beat your former self? If you answered yes to any of these questions then your experience was worth more than the cost of going whether you won or lost.

Don't beat yourself up too much mate, competing is the ultimate test of your skills and you will always find something you need/want to improve! Good on you for getting in there mate, most important thing is you had fun! Will you be posting links to the videos?
