Is 10th Planet finally respected?

The beautiful thing about jiu jitsu is you can say whatever you want about another style, but rolling will prove what really works. A couple weeks back I was on the road and found a Gracie Barra in Florida and asked if I could drop in and roll, after telling them I was 10th Planet they were kind of skeptical. Then when it came time to roll I caught 2 blue belts and a purple in twisters. It wasn't even a skilled set up, I got to the truck and they reached for my head. One of the purple belts there said something like "Man, I have to study up on that twister shit". By the time we were done rolling I think they really respected the whole 10P game even though they still see it as unorthodox and everything. A lot of it just has to do with traditional guys not drilling and practicing stuff that their instructors don't believe in, they see back control as the best position for offense while we see the truck as our highest percentage position to finish from. One of the brown belts there actually had a pretty killer lockdown too. So I think a lot of techniques are slowly starting to spread

A guy from my gym on the fight team came up to me and said "that stuff doesn't work." He was dead serious faced. I was with a training partner who wanted to drill some truck techniques and I had my mastering the twister book with me while we were doing it. That's pretty much the extent of anything I'd consider negative from personal experience about 10P and the RG. Statements like that drive me to keep working hard at developing my game so that someday my jiu jits speaks for the 10P system and myself simply by being effective.

The gym I used to train at, The trainer there hates hard on 10th planet. I put guys of all sizes in gogoplatas omoplatas spiderweb lock down, EC and their response is that it only works for flexible guys and the best one.

"I wouldn't ever use that RG crap because I want to be able to walk when I'm older. It might be ok now but you will blow your knees. If it isn't natural movement then you shouldn't force your body to do it."

I showed him that angles in RG make it super easy and 'natural' and he just ignored it and repeated the warning. That was the trainer there. I just don't have time for that kind of negativity in my life.

One of my instructors screamed at me the other day during no-gi when I went for a calf-slicer from the truck against another blue belt. I had submitted him twice w/ the banana split from the truck and the third time around, I was going for it again but he defended it, basically handing the calf-slicer on a silver platter. A twister would've probably gotten me kicked outta class, to be honest. He was concerned about the safety of the students, but obviously it's not competition so if a dude wasn't tapping, I'd have just let it go. I tried explaining this to him but he doesn't even know the truck and couldn't understand where I was coming from. Regardless, I've been finding 10p techniques to be extremely effective but this one particular instructor has a hardcore IBJJF mentality and I got chewed out. To be fair, we have a very open-minded school and this instructor came up under a different lineage and transplanted to our city. The craziest part was that my training partner wanted to know how I did it. He didn't get hurt or mad, just curious. But I still think there's a ways to go and it's amazing that moves, and I mean literally, jiu jitsu moves can have politics behind it. Still gonna go for it though wherever I can.

man it has changed been training under Denny since he was a purple , at a mma gym,... so 07 or so

I wont even go and say stuff that I personally saw at tourneys, around the city, guys from "other " gyms
I got some shit, Denny took alot and I was always impressed with how he handled it
I see it, the old guard doesnt want to give anything to the new guard. and so it goes
but damn I remember being at a *very well respected american BB , (that everyone loves and is innovative in his own right) seminar(09 I think) and hear him trash talk " a certain guard" and a "certain escape" from side mount in 10P to the whole crowd, and mostly everyone chuckled and theres me in a 10p hoodie.

I trained with coach herzog for almost five years before moving to Pittsburgh where I currently train at a Renzo Gracie school. I haven't experienced any type of discrimination when I roll with dudes who knows my home gym is 10th planet. The occassional making fun of the names of the techniques is the extent of anything and even that is in good, joking fun. I was training there when Eddie smashed royler at Metamoris and everybody at the gym gave Eddie and the system mad respect. There are several dudes at my gym who love 10pjj on the low and are always asking me when Eddie is doing a seminar in rochester. The black belt under daniel and renzo gracie is a cool dude and has never given me shit about using 10th planet techniques. But i heard that he is one of those hardcore IBBJF/gracie guys. But i believe that is out of respect for his coach because he always compliments me when I catch dudes with a 10th planet technique. Once I started training there i'd say within a week or two the instructors would do technique work against defending the lock down (they call it the scorpion lock) and other 10th planet technique which I thought was fun and proves to me that they know this stuffs is very effective. I'd say the majority of the dudes at my gym don't hate on 10th planet but definitely don't think it can keep up with their system...until we roll. I'm sure like a lot of other guys have experienced once you roll with someone who hates on 10pjj and you show them whats up minds are immediately changed. "Bro I almost tapped from your scorpion lock".

Yeah, things have changed so much in the last 5 or 6 years.

I remember in 2009, a known So-Cal BJJ blackbelt over on the UG was openly saying things like this:

"What I can tell you, without a doubt in my mind, is that 99% of the guys Ive rolled with who come from no gi backgrounds (there are some exceptions, like Mac Danzig and some of Gokor's students) are NOTHING on the ground compared to decent purple belts who put their time in with the gi. It's night and day, and Ive rolled with tons from both sides of the debate over the years."

Not only did he think pure no-gi guys were "nothing" on the ground compared to gi purple belts. He also felt that it was a form of "arrogance" to even attempt to deviate from the Brazilian gi method. This guy is an American too. Hahahaha.

In Brazil they have been training with the gi and developing insane jiujitsu skills for both gi and no gi. The best pure grapplers still come from Brazil and only a few Americans come close.

And ALL of those grapplers still believe in the gi.

But then it gets to America and the Americans think they've figured it all out. They think, "Those Brazilians use primitive training methods," as if the Brazilians never considered the possibility that FIGHTING, which is what they were doing in Vale Tudo (and with just shorts) could possibly be better prepared for if training was done without the gi.

The truth is that some Brazilians DID abandon the gi, and their technique suffered for it. Ever see match ups between Luta Livre guys and BJJers? It wasnt even close. Same techniques for the most part, but vastly different level when it came to skill and execution.

I honestly hope more people train without the gi than with it. It really makes them easier to roll with."

This was a thread that Eddie and Louis Ho had both already posted in. So, he was basically saying this all right in the face of pure no-gi guys. So, it wasn't like they were off handed remarks that he never intended any no-gi guys to see.

But things have definitely changed. I don't think you would see many known American black belts saying these kinds of things so publicly and emphatically these days.
