Belt rank transfer nogi>gi, gi>nogi

sup 10th planet universe, I have an interesting topic I want all of you 10ps to discuss. I posted a reddit bjj topic about transfer of belt rank from nogi to gi, or gi to nogi. Details of the topic and how it applies to me in the link.

what I want to talk about is all the IBJJF competitors (GI people) who decide to compete in NOGI WORLDS transfer their belt rank over no problem. but if you guys can see on the post,most GI people dont think 10th planet belt ranks can transfer over to GI.

what do you guys think?

I have no problem with anybody saying "Hey I'm a purple belt in Gi, therefore I'll compete in purple belt no gi." If he's not purple belt level he will get smashed. If you want to throw a gi on and compete at your 10th planet belt rank, you do you brother. That being said, I think it is much easier for a gi practitioner to transfer to no gi then it is vice versa, IMO. But once again, the most damage you will do is get beaten badly, not hurting anyone else.

Here's my theory:

I'm guessing a lot of the BJJ world hasn't figured out even yet what 10th Planet can do no-gi (or even what other academies that have a no-gi program, or heck, even a catch-wrestling program can do). So, for them, it's easy to imagine that someone who trains no-gi only will drown as soon as gi grips are in play. It's difficult for them to imagine that a person who trains gi only will drown in no-gi because most of the people they train against aren't doing no-gi 50% of the time much less 100% of the time. To you, they could look like purple belts and if you kept your mouth shut, they wouldn't know any better.

I'm also guessing that a lot of 10th Planet folks would be surprised how difficult it would be if we put our best dudes in gis and sent them to the Pan Ams. I don't think it would go well. They are different games, no?

Extending that a bit: Eddie has said that Gi and No Gi are simply different sports and that if you spend all your time tugging and pulling that this will not help your clinching and squeezing game. They are simply different games. The same is true in reverse and those tugging and pulling games can be really frustrating and confusing for a person who isn't familiar with them.

But you don't have a black belt in a *game.* You have a black belt in a *martial art.* Right?

So what's that mean? What expectations would you have of a dude who had a black belt in BJJ if you threw a Gi on him and tossed him in with purple and brown belts? If he was getting destroyed, would you feel comfortable saying "Well, he's a black belt in no-gi...so..."

I don't know. I'm a white belt. But I'm glad I train 50/50.

(Sorry if this sounds like I've got some kind of axe to grind, I'm genuinely thinking the question through and seeing some things I didn't see yesterday)

If you intend to compete in a gi, you should probably train in a gi at least a little bit, no? If you roll with some various belt colors in a gi, you should get a pretty good idea what rank you are in a gi.

years ago as a 10 p purple I would train at a gi school now and then teacher asked to wear a white belt
I did out of respect
but now id tell em to pound sand
disrespectfull to my coach sure i get collar choked a few times but its the same game generally to me

this is retarded people need to worry about actually doing something than this kinda shit you either got game or you don't belts don't mean half as much as people think they do. If/when I can get to blue or purple skill level in the 10P system, I honestly couldn't give a @#ck if a gi coach told me to put on a white belt in his/her school so long as I could roll.

Ideally belt ranks would be honored across styles. But like others have said, the styles are so different. I'm still a 10th planet white belt but I've had pretty good success against gi blue and purple belts (in no gi). If we had rolled gi, I would've been disposed of pretty quickly as I have no gi experience. So really, it makes sense that the gi guys don't accept no gi belt rank transfers. (But I'm sure they respect it none the less)
