You assume only females have body piercings. I've had male students with nipple, navel and even prince albert piercings.

About 10 years ago I had both nips pierced and thought I could get away with putting band aids, then a layer of surgical tape on them, then a rash guard wagering I'd be pretty much safe during rolls. Personal experience....I was sooo...dead..wrong. I'm lucky I didn't get one of them torn completely out during being on bottom of side control. You could go the "try yourself and find out route," but I'm gonna say that over a long enough time period it's a 100% chance of going quite badly. Sorry to burst the proverbial bubble for ya, but when it comes to the safety of my fellow Nibirus/friends/family, I'd rather you be able to make an educated decision when going into something. Good luck on your life decision on "To Pierce, or not to pierce, that is the question."

My 14 year old daughter has her belly button pierced and she trains with it. For the first 6 months, she taped it up with KT tape (Kinesiology tape). I told her from the start, she is not missing Jiu Jitsu because of a piercing that doesn't belong there, but she was insistent that she got it, so KT tape it is.

There is no doubt that it was uncomfortable for her to roll with it as it was still healing, and she whined about it and used it as an excuse to try to get out of Newaza on the days she was feeling lazy. Some day it might get ripped out of her belly from rolling, but I warned her about that.

She does have one and so far she is alright.

I personally has my "nipple" pierced for 20 years, but after falling in love with Jiu Jitsu, I decided to take it out forever because removing it for class five times a week was a pain in the ass, and it never seemed to want to heal up quite perfectly, so I just figured it wasn't meant to be and scrapped it. I originally tried taping it but that just ended with it almost getting ripped out.

You can always try to do what I did. I wanted a jiu jitsu tattoo badly, but I was worried it may get infected or not turn out as well due to rolling. You're supposed to not swim or sweat as much as possible when you get a tattoo as well I am told. Obviously, it doesn't make sense to take time off from jits to get a jits tattoo, so I decided to wait until I was forced to take a break from jits for a while. Last fall I ended up breaking my foot unfortunately which made me take some time off from the mats. During that time, I was able to get my tattoo that turned out great! Maybe you could just wait till something forces you to take a small break from training like I did. I think I waited patiently about 6 months. Hopefully if you do, it'll be later rather than sooner.

I decided the other day after having both my flared plugs ripped out of my ears at the same time to take them out before class. I think from now on I'll go the Martinez brothers route and put tape over the holes to avoid any snags when I roll without the jewelry in.
