my match from kakuto 5 this weekend!

i had the pleasure of competing at the kakuto submission challenge this weekend with my team. it is my favorite tournament here in the southeast. they always bring out high level guys and the atmosphere is awesome!
here is the only match i had in my division. joeseph carroll is a bjj black belt with gracie barra lineage. tough dude. it was an honor to share the mat with him. enjoy!

i lost my first one in the absolute to a tough brown belt. he was a pretty big guy and has been around for a long time. very solid grappler. it was awesome to get to move with him though. here is my match with him.

Great roll from you both. I love how smooth it can look when both jiu jitsu players are relying more on technique than athleticism, not that athleticism is bad. Great work!

Good on you for posting the wins and the losses, too. There's so much to learn from the losses. But a lot of times our pride gets in the way of letting folks see that part of our journey.

We are so bound up in the temporal... yeah I lost today, as a purple belt or whatever... how would the me 10 years from now have done today? I'd have smashed the guy. It's about becoming that 10 years from now guy.... the journey.

And in the same way we should not be too proud of the wins. That guy I smashed today, him from 10 years from now, would completely smash me.

Both the wins and the losses are merely signposts along the road.

That's one of the most wonderful things about this art. Athleticism, important. Size, important. Intelligence, important. Technique, trumps them all.
