I heard someone on a podcast today say that technically in order to award a student a black belt you yourself would have to have been a black belt for at least 9 years. Is this true? Ive never heard of that before. How long was Eddie a BB before he awarded Denny his?

Technically, a black belt can award a black belt to any other person. If that person wants to be registered by the IBJJF, to compete in IBJJF events, they need a 2-stripe black belt to vouch for them (even if they themselves did not award that black belt to the new person) and sign the certification docs online. To get 2 stripes, you would need to have been a black belt a minimum of 6 years.

Eddie still gets his degrees from JJM, but I don't think JJM follows IBJJF regs, it's probably pretty similar though Originally Posted by Brent Smith
