I've got some people that really balk at the term retard control, myself included. This isn't a big PC crusade or anything, I don't care what anyone else calls it, but the fact is it bothers some people. In my daily life I work as a pediatric therapist and so obviously I have a little sore spot about the term, and some of the guys in my gym have relatives/family members/friends with a disability, so it's just not something I'm really able to use.
My question is, I've seen others refer to "special ed control", "animal control", etc. Are these separate positions, or are they alternate names for the same position? We've been calling it Animal Control where I train. Do other folks have similar issues with this?
Granted, there aren't a lot of names that would NEED to be changed in the 10P system, but if we call it something different just within our own gym, how big a deal is that?
It's a fair question. In this world people are getting more and more PC. One example is you can't call anything gay without there being a crusade. It doesn't have to be directed at gay people or have anything to do with them, but there will generally be a reaction, particularly in a professional setting. Your daily life is different than your jiu jitsu life. "The first rule of Fight Club is: You do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is: You do not talk about Fight Club." When I started jiu jitsu, I was that guy that wore jiu jitsu shirts, talked about jiu jitsu, and carried the flag proudly wherever I went. Women don't like it, peers at work or school think it's weird and/or arrogant, family members even get annoyed by it. It's been much more satisfying carrying this as sort of an alter ego. In the GYM, retard is merely the name of a position. It's right next door to crackhead control, which the argument could be made is just as non-PC. I don't normally use the word in any other context though, ESPECIALLy outside the dojo.
