alright folks. let's just get some perspective back. this is about the kids/teens matches. no one is watching ebi for that. they are great, yes, and sometimes showcase more moves than some of the adults, but we ain't watching for the kids.

I agree with Coach zog and Sean. This could be one of those joker memes, RNC someone unconscious and no one cares, but get an injury from a heelhook and everybody loses their minds!

What I see is a lot of fear mongering around a move that while being dangerous, is, as sean put it, basically considered more dangerous than most other submissions because of the lack of knowledge around it.

As far as I'm aware EBI had two high level young competitors who both were allowed to heel hook because they asked for it, and one of the girls was caught in it and didn't know when or how to tap out. The thing that gets me is that they were banned but both of the competitors asked for it. To me that means that any of the consequences should be taken as they come.

So far I haven't heard any complaints from Sophie. I feel like if this was any other type of submission and someone was injured, young or old, then people would feel bad and move on with their lives. no talk about banning kimuras, or omoplatas.

and for people giving Eddie a bit of strife about banning it, it's a good business move. EBI is young and has so far been doing amazingly well. going from strength to strength, and listening to its audience. While I disagree with banning heel hooks, I understand where Eddie is going with this, and I wish him all the best. Within a very short time, EBI has become, if not the best, then one fo the best grappling shows in the world. Keep it going.

Brother I'm not talking about the girl that got injured. I've heard she's fine and I'm happy about that.

I responded to a sentence that said "This could be one of those joker memes, RNC someone unconscious and no one cares, but get an injury from a heel hook and everybody loses their minds!" to which I was replying, that the difference there is that worst case scenario with a RNC is that someone goes to sleep. Worst case with a heel hook (or ANY other joint lock) is that someone gets badly injured.

Is it a reason in and of itself to ban heel hooks or joint locks? Of course not. We do a martial art. But for kids I do think Eddie made the right choice. I was halfway kidding back and I wasn't talking about anyone in particular, as I didn't think he was either.

I have done exactly the opposite of fear mongering. I encourage all grapplers to learn the shit out of heel hooks and (and everything else for that matter) because you're going to get dusted by someone that bothered to do it. Everything I've said in this thread is very much in favor of promoting knowledge, experimentation, and growth in the education and application of heel hooks.

I mean I got tapped with 2 inside heel hooks tonight from inside sankaku (honeyhole) and I finished 2 outside heel hooks from outside ashi, and it was awesome! I love using them. No one came close to getting hurt.

I look forward to the kids matches and the rest equally. Why? Because the kids are young, fast, resilient, lively, energetic and full of heart. They oftentimes have more transitions and sub attempts than the adult matches. The kids train hard and they try hard. The kids matches are always awesome.

There is a chance that I feel this way because I have two girls, 13 and 15, who train in BJJ as well, but I think that even if I didn't have my kids I would find the kids matches just as fun to watch.

I look forward to the kids matches as well and I'm sure anyone that's ever seen an EBI does also, because the kids matches are always awesome and often steal the show. But for first time buyers I can see how they'd be more interested in the main bracket.

But you're right and I think out of my top 5 or 6 EBI matches that half of them are youth matches

Folks, let's not forget that EBI is supposed to be entertainment first and foremost.

I actually prefer watching the kids matches - they have mad scrambles, back and forth and they really go for it - in contrast the adult matches are much more cautious, and with the heel hooks it can all be over in a second. One minute there's not much goin on then bang somebody lies back for a heel hook and has won from nowhere. Personally I find that a bit dull.

In contrast the kids matches are real battles usually with a build up to a fantastic victory. More of that I say.
