I do. My first school disallowed vaporizers and it sucked. My current school is much looser.
Because I'm a whitebelt I treat the vaporizer as catch and release. I will transition into it but not pull and watch what my opponent does. If he is paying attention he'll know he's caught and give you the tap. If he's fighting against the position, I let him go. So I really never put any pressure on the calf or the ankle. Zero chance anyone gets hurt. At that point anyone who has a problem with you doing it is probably not worried about injury, but is instead the kind of person who does not want to learn to defend things they don't currently know.
To me it brings up what is a more important question. My is my school not allowing a purple belt to use leg locks? What is their reasoning behind that? It's a question that would certainly cause me to consider other schools. Maybe it's still the best option for you, if so you're stuck but maybe there is another school with more progressive thinking about how the art is evolving.
I'm a newbie and I don't really know shit about top stoner, but I have to think there's a way to get to the back. Surly there is some way to get past his shoulder? Hopefully someone who knows wtf they are talking about will respond to this thread.
