Hey guys, I'm hoping someone or a couple of y'all can help me out. I've been trying out local jiu-jitsu schools to try and find a good home. I took a couple of classes from 10th Planet Austin, where I live, and loved it. However, when I go to other gyms and they ask where I've trained before and I tell them I've had a couple classes at 10P they ALL seem to have the same reponse. 1. You need to train both gi and no gi (don't really care about this). 2. You're going to miss out on developing sound fundamentals (this I do care about).
But, is that really true? I'll be honest, the classes I took at 10P were super advanced and being a no stripe white belt I didn't know what the hell was going on most of the time--but I loved it. I took a fundamentals class today at Gracie Barra and actually liked how we learned very basic things like arm bar from mount, key lock from mount--even what a mount is. Maybe to some or most of you guys this isn't a big deal, but to me it is. I want to develop solid fundamentals. Someone said you can get the fundamentals from the warm ups and I've looked through most of them and I still don't see a lot of things that I would consider fundamental (arm bar from mount, etc) in there. I hope all this makes sense and I don't come off the wrong way. The thing is, I really dig 10P but at the same time I want to have a strong foundation as well.
