I'm so glad you're not knocking LeBell.
Anyway, I found this:
"It has always been my understanding that Lou unified the NWA&AWA[Alliance]titles by defeating Karl Gotch in Sept/1964 in Columbus.World- Titles.com lists this as the date of the change as well.Upon looking at some Columbus results I see that Thesz beat Gotch on September 2,1963,in what was billed as NWA World Title vs AWA World Title. The two met again 9-21-63 with no mention of it being a title match.Gotch wrestled the rest of the year,October and November shows not listed as a champ. However on the January 4/1964 show Gotch is listed as champ in a world's title match vs Dick the Bruiser.[no mention is made of what title].Two weeks later Thesz and Gotch fought to a draw with both listed as champions.
On the next two shows both guys appeared[not against one another]and both were listed as champs.Gotch continued to appear in this area as champ until Sept/64 when he again lost to Thesz in another unification match.Anyone know if Gotch held two different belts? Maybe a Columbus and a Detroit version of the AWA?"
