I've known about all except the oil rigs in L.A. I guess I never paid any attention, or thought they were cell towers of some sort.
There are a few old missile bases around the Omaha/Lincoln area, all of which are now decommissioned. I had the opportunity to go explore one of the above ground bases, interesting stuff (and I have some pictures if anyone is interested, here:
http://s300.photobucket.com/albums/n...tlas-D%20Base/). Now Western Nebraska, you'll find some silos out there that are still operational. I remember going out to my aunts farm in the summers when I was younger and seeing the silos (or pads if you will) out in the middle of fields and such. Hell, the closest town takes pride in the fact that they have the largest single amount of missiles in the United States:
