If I had to guess I would say because of 1. Sponsership money & 2. Friction for his Jiu-Jitsu, he probably thought he wouldn't have to escape a lot if at all and so added friction would help him submit his opponets. Ballpark, best guess.

Do you train at Wands Ron? I have been graciously invited to Demians last three fight camps, and haven't made it yet...
His last one was in Chicago, and I really should have made it up to that one...

my son trains at wands, i wand to train but my shoulder is recuperating... we are in cali and he is training at 10th planet riverside this week and probably next week also...
