    Vinny Magalhaes Defending Rubber Guard

Saw this on the UG earlier today. It's a thread about techs that will not work in MMA. Naturally, some folks chime in with their opinions on the ineffectiveness of the Rubber Guard.

you have to have any tech at a master level for it to be effective in high level competition. my left jab sucks so what does that mean? nothing.

This. They are using what is called a "base rate" argument: using weak evidence to make a probability judgment without taking into account known empirical statistics about the probability. That is, they are ignoring what guards have worked for people in the past, and instead are appealing to a hypothetical (giving reasons why whateverguard wouldn't work).

    Logical fallacies are fun.

Left jabs are a gimmick. You have to have a solid base in right crosses before you can even think about left jabs

I love it when people say you need "base" before you can make the rg work. You can say that about any guard or any technique really. Like you can make double wrist control guard work at a high level without "base". Can you make x guard work without base? What about 50/50 guard? would that work at a high level without base? Of course you need "base" to make the rg work, we work on basics and fundamentals at hq all the time. We just mix the long term projects in there as well to make things exciting, dummies

Well put master Eddie. I keep telling myself the guys on the underground forum are the same ones who for years said the pride fighters would destroy the ufc fighters and we see how that worked out. In 5 years or so they will be eating crow about 10th planet as well

oh, and the point of the thread was kind of a "thanks, vinny" for defending what we all believe to be true: that the rubber guard (and other 10thP techs) can and do work at the highest levels of competition if one takes the time to learn them and apply them in faith.
