One of my coaches imparted a bit of knowledge on me years ago that has shaped my life and how I developed as coach. Its about checking ones "premise". I took it as: I'm the one that has to look myself in the mirror every morning and be "okay" with who I am, and ask myself if I doing the best I can as a coach for my students? am I keeping up with all the new techniques and transitions that they may encounter? This is one of the reason I came to find 10th Planet, I was looking for stuff that my guys may potentially run in to. Then I fell in love with it, and realized the 10th Planet System checks its premise as well everyday. Its not afraid to evolve, its encouraged. Its alot of damn work, drilling and trying to master the core components of the system, the modifications and then all the new shits thats constantly being added. Its what makes the system so different, and people don't like different.

thanx Chris...and really, hate or no hate...I'm gonna do what I'm gonna do and I'm not gonna be told to "buy" something because of the name. To me it just shows how brain washed some folks can be. Like Nike really makes u run faster and jump higher...ill take my BoBo knock off no name sneakers...not only will I still be faster, but ill have extra money in my pocket to take your girl friend out for ice cream. Grown ass men and women need to have the ability to think on their own, assess the pros and cons and then decide what is effective.....just my two cents

I know when I first trained in jiujitsu I had no idea who my instructor was or what he had achieved throughout his life or even what his students were accomplishing every month. I imagine that if I had walked in there waving a 10th Planet book and saying, "Well Eddie does it this way..." that I would get some hard stares back at me. Most would probably see it as a sign of disrespect when in reality it would have just been a naive and sincere question. Here I am paying over $100 a month to train directly under their instructor but then I'm going to pick and choose his curriculum for myself?

Thankfully, my first gym and my current gym both have very open minded instructor's who don't view things that way but I could see how some people would see it as just blatantly stepping on their dick (not that I walked in and waved a 10th Planet book, actually they both introduced me to 10th Planet techniques).

I mean this sort of thing happens on a micro level all the time. A wrestler sees a judo variation of a double leg, says screw it, and drills his variation instead. Do you view your gym as just a resource that you use or are you paying hard cash to learn your instructor's game and his specific perspective on jiujitsu?

Just got to jump on to say I've never felt any hate from any gym I've gone to. A lot of the haters out there come from the same place as all the fanboys, outside of the gym and on internet forums. Never have I trained with someone and had them say anything bad about 10th Planet. Then again there are certain gyms I will probably not drop in at for certain reputations.

I'm with you. I see a lot of the hate on the internet. But face to face I have never heard anyone show anything but respect to Eddie. I know of some people who have had said they had bad experiences with traditional students, though. Personally, I am always treated with respect when I meet people from other schools and traditions (at least to my face).

well I got kicked out from my gym partially because I've been training under Eddie and helped some dudes getting ready for their MMA fights lol
So yeah plenty of hate but they can all suck my dick Mostly when we mope the floor with those clowns...

I go to a Gi school and while my instructor is "skeptical" of some 10th PJJ techniques, he is open minded to them. Occasionally he even teaches some basic rubber guard stuff(meat hook to triangle ect). That being said he isnt as open on lockdown stuff just because my school takes pride in their own style of half guard. He realizes that rubber guard isn't for everyone but has the philosophy of "if it works for you use it" Fortunately he gets to see me and a few other guys at my gym have success with it so he is pretty cool with 10thPJJ (thankfully) although he doesn't use it much in his game.
