My instructor hates 10th P. I just chalk it up as a personal opinion and do my Jiu Jitsu. He would also disapprove of my opinions on alot of things, but these things have no place at the gym. His stuff works for me,but I am drawn to things that are about chage and effectivness. "From the past you gain security, but from the new you gain the flow".-Bruce Lee

i wondered what the deal was with all the anti-tpjj comments i see on the internet, so i contacted a guy who'd left a comment on one of eddie's youtube vids. i contacted him because he avoided insults and his tone was almost pitying (towards tpjj). his comment said that tpjj is the laughing stock of the jiu jitsu world, that this was what united all the other schools.
so, i e-mailed him asking for the reasons behind the mass negativity. he replied that his teacher was 4th degree and had promoted 30+ blacks, all of whom teach. he then pointed out that tpjj schools are "notorious" for having purples run them.

another sticking point for most everyone else, he said, was the names for techniques. he had no problem with strange names (he mentioned the d'arce) but complained that a lot of tpjj you can't teach children.

he also said that eddie's promotion of his music and marijuana had no place in jiu jitsu dvds, and reactions ranged from ridicule to anger that they would be connected.

eddie's win over royler is seen as lucky, and people say eddie thinks this because he didn't compete again. the guy also says that if we were to follow eddie's logic, everyone should follow leo viera.

the general opinion is that tpjj black belts aren't real black belts, because if they wore a gi, purple belts could tap them.

his personal opinion is that the rubber guard is a "stagnant game", where you hold a guy down for a "lame triangle or omaplata". he thinks that jiu jitsu should be flowing, have an exchange of sweeps and counters.

some of what he said surprised me, both the content and his tone: some of it i was expecting. i personally like the rubber guard, it's upped my percentages significantly. i don't know about "an exchange of sweeps and counters" i was just sick of having guys 2-5 stone heavier than me getting on top and gnp. i was unsurprised by the gi comments, and wondered which tpjj black he'd rolled with.

overall though, it did give me an insight into what everyone else is thinking.

There's a lot of reasons for the hate but there's a lot of respect too. You have to remember, a school has to sell their product. They'll bad mouth anything that's not theirs. Also, if someone sucks at jiu jitsu, they just say "he sucks at jiu jitsu", if someone sucks at 10th Planet, they say "see, 10th Planet doesn't work". 10th Planet grows everyday and Eddie appreciates it dearly but you've got to put the reps in. For some, it's like a new toy. You play with it for a while then move on to something else. We are a loving family but please, please, put in your reps. If it's not working, you don't have the reps, leg curls, and technique down yet. Keep at it. Some people might bad mouth the system but ask them about Denny or Sean and there's nothing but respect. The system is young and ever changing. Don't sweat it. Just keep working.

If you go to the official Gracie web zones they mention that it dosen't fit the "Fighting techniques that work for almost anyone" approach they have. Mentioning that you need a lot of flexibility to use rubber guard ect... And Eddie tapped a Gracie.

I know of a few people that rolled with eddie and didn't have anything bad to say, joe scarola being one of them. I think everyone needs to respect the different views that are used in jiu jitsu, its the only way the sport will grow.

I have heard this a lot, which just feels weird, I mean, flexibility isnt something impossible to attain, maybe for some people its harder, but there are 10thPJJ techniques that dont need flexibility to execute, as well as sometimes in Eddies vids a "for students with flexibility issues" follow up.

My opinion on this is that first, it is much easier for people to hate than it is to seek out the truth. Seeking the truth requires effort and a willingness to put ego aside, remain humble, and learn that the techniques offer merit. Hate is the easy way out. Second, people will always offer their opinions which is fine, they're entitled to that, and often these opinions are connected to attitudes and emotions that are difficult to sway one way or the other. People will always fear things outside of the margins until it becomes more centered and identifiable in the culture. This takes time. Open minded individuals will always be receptive to new ideas and that's what I can appreciate about those people. My greatest concern, however, is more about how I personally feel about the system which is that it is a system that is super fun to learn and train and it is certainly effective. Outsiders will recognize this in due time. This thread makes me think of all of the times in history that someone thought outside of the box and called them crazy for that. Can you imagine what people said about Columbus, Edison, Franklin, or the others? That must've been something.

    Hello .
My name is Philippe, i live in France. I have to passion in life : BJJ and Music .
I am musician and bjj practionner.
Here in France, bjj is'nt famous at all. Some people know about Eddie and his victory against royler . Both are great fighters .
My opinion about a " potential " hatred against eddie is due to his free spirit. Eddie is a free mind, a free man. a real one.
So, the majority hate this kind of guy cause they want to be like that !
To me , eddie is an exemple .

    All my respect people .
See you on the mat someday !

    Greetings from France !
