A lot of people, unfortunately, are prone to want to be part of the in crowd, and to believe what said crowd believes. Many folk new to BJJ listen to the internet, then they believe what the interwebs says, and then, the unfortunate part is they repeat it.

I know if I see something on the web three or four times, even I can sometimes be tricked into believing it's true.

10th Planet and Eddie are not mainstream cliches of what everything is supposed to be like. People fear going against the norm and are afraid of change, what they don't realize is that the "outside the box" type of thinking is what revolutions are made out of.

The need to be liked or have other peoples approval has never had any biological or psychological effects on any aspect of my life. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be accepted or wanting to avoid rejection, but there reaches a point when it becomes abnormal. I would say this thread reached the point of emo or needy girlfriend about two pages ago. This incessant need to be considered an outsider or on the fringe is adorable for a while but it wears thin after about twenty seconds or so and yes you look fat in GI.

one of the reasons i joined 10th Planet jiujitsu Delaware was because is was NOT affiliated with the Gracies , now im not hating on the Gracies but bjj schools here in Delaware were using thier name to get members and some were getting honorary belts and paying their 4000$$$ for their belt test .
it was around the time of the late 1990s schools were opening up everywhere offeing gracie jiujitsu and even these karate schools were saying they were teaching bjj it was like overnight after the first few ufc's

Eddie made 10th planet after saying in an interview that all of bjj is boring and expected. He wanted to add on and make more moves for fighters and jj students. Traditional practitioners got mad because they thought he was going against real jiu jitsu by not using a gi.

I train at Gracie Barra and I also train 10thPJJ, I use 10thPJJ at Gracie Barra all the time and it works, gi and nogi, people know Im a wrestler and think Im just using wrestling sweeps. I just smile and nod when they ask. I dont use any rubber guard but I focus alot on 10thPJJs half guard and pyramid positions. They can talk all the shit they want when they wake up...

One of my coaches imparted a bit of knowledge on me years ago that has shaped my life and how I developed as coach. Its about checking ones "premise". I took it as: I'm the one that has to look myself in the mirror every morning and be "okay" with who I am, and ask myself if I doing the best I can as a coach for my students? am I keeping up with all the new techniques and transitions that they may encounter? This is one of the reason I came to find 10th Planet, I was looking for stuff that my guys may potentially run in to. Then I fell in love with it, and realized the 10th Planet System checks its premise as well everyday. Its not afraid to evolve, its encouraged. Its alot of damn work, drilling and trying to master the core components of the system, the modifications and then all the new shits thats constantly being added. Its what makes the system so different, and people don't like different.

Amen to that brother! I couldn't agree with you more! I look to 10thPJJ for all the same reasons. The constant evolution is my favorite element of 10thPJJ. Far too many closed minded individuals in a small community!

ive been there where its been shuned and it sucks i say train what u like if u just nogi then do that if just gi guy then thats your gig me i like to do both i feel keeps me sharp and focused and thats coming from a wrestling background. but i still think that has absolutely nothin to do with jiu jitsu i think its really more about my favorite style medical jiu jitsu .but i say to hell with them old school stuck in the 50s minded haters kinda the way use to be in music people fear change they need someone to blame and in jiu jitsu eddie bravo is our beatles mania

I think the main reason 10th planet BJJ is hated on is that the main reason for it's popularity (rubber guard) polarizes the BJJ community. In my experience with talking about rubber guard, those people that dislike it generally have a philosophy of BJJ that everyone should be able to do the technique for it to be quality and to teach it. Something that requires a certain level of flexibility doesn't fit into their idea of what BJJ should represent. The 10th planet system is very complex, and people always want things to be simple, and so they make it about rubber guard, and think that's all there is to it. No one cares to take a deeper look, because they can't see past the rubber guard.
