Charles Oliveira signs 4-fight contract extension with UFC

When Houston-based Charles Oliveira took on Jim Miller at UFC 124, most experts were split on whether or not it was too much, too soon for the 21 year old Brazilian prodigy. He debuted with the UFC in August of last year, after piling up a 12-0 record, mostly in Brazil. His first fight was against Darren Elkins, who had gotten a win over Duane Ludwig in his first fight. Oliveira made short work of him, finishing with an armbar :41 seconds into the fight. 6 weeks later, Oliveira took on The Ultimate Fighter season 8 winner Efrain Escudero. The fight was back and forth, with Oliveira eventually finishing Escudero with a standing rear naked choke. Since losing to Oliveira, neither Escudero or Elkins has had another fight with the UFC. Oliveira's first round submission loss to Miller, combined with the fact that the WEC's competitive lightweight division was being folded into the company, had to make him at least a little nervous about his career with the company.

The UFC calmed his nerves on Friday. Oliveira and the UFC agreed on a 4 fight extension late last week, according to his management. "I am very happy about the extension," Oliveira said. "They have been cutting so many 155 pounders, I am very blessed to have a job for 2011."
