    Question about the RNC

    Hey guys,

So i have a million and one questions and half of them will probly seem foolish lol, so i'll start with just one today.

Last time i was in class, i found myself in a dilemma. my partner was on his knees turtling, and i had belly to back control. at first my main focus was getting my hooks in, and maintaining over/under (seatbelt). i saw himreach for my foot and i thought i had an opening for the neck. i went for the choke WITHOUT having my hooks in, but my hooks were for sure step two in that situation. before i could blink he rolled into guard eventually getting my arm. after i tapped, i asked him if he had any tips on how i could have done better, he told me he baited me my pretending to grab my foot, hoping id go for the choke. i was tricked! lol. he mentioned my control felt good,

So my question is in a situation where u have bck control without hooks, is it ever a good idea to go for an opening when u see it, apply the chokes and establish hooks right after? or is taboo. is it ALWAYS priority to get my hooks in before going for an attack, even if an opportunity presents itself for a choke (like when his arms arnt defending)? or is there anytime when i can go for the choke without having hooks in?

Yes, sometimes you can sink in the choke when he's think about the hooks. If you see him not defending sure go for it, you can finish it without the hooks. Personally I would attempt to open his turtle up and work to a get the hooks in, you're much more likely to finish a submission when you can maintain control.

As far as competition goes the getting the hooks is typically big points too so it's a good thing to work on.

absolutely you can choke a guy from there without hooks, in fact I prefer it. everyone is so worried about getting the hooks or keeping the hooks off of them that they're not paying attention to the choke and if you get the choke, they forget about blocking your hooks, in which case it's easy to throw it on there. there is a brief moment where your opponent can roll when you release the underhook to finish the choke, so you have to do that fast. however you have the advantage in knowing when you're releasing the underhook, where as he has to feel for it. as for being directing behind him when in turtle position, I never do that as it's not very good control and very easy to defend/escape. I personally stay on the side while putting my knee into his mid section with my ankle on the top half of his calf that's closest to me with an over under grip threatening the choke at all times. Also you can trap his arm with your other leg, giving you more control AND making it easier to get the choke. You can finish it there without the hooks as well. Just how I do it at least.
