This is 100% true! I should have been more specific with my "+1" post. Yet, it can hurt 10th Planet image nonetheless.

traditional to me is the bjj schools that are closed minded, they make stupid comments like thats not jiu jitsu or that dont work or thats blubber guard.

10th planet is not just rubber guard and is not only non traditional moves it is a open minded approach to bjj which incorporates traditional and non traditional moves.

the people that are stuck in (tradition - the handing down from generation to generation of the same customs, beliefs, etc) will be left behind

If you think 10th Planet jiu jitsu is just rubber guard and twister then you know very little about the system. 10th Planet is everything that works no gi. If you watch all 16 episodes of Mastering The System you would know that I teach everything that is no gi not just rubber guard. Every no gi technique out there that has been proven has been incorporated into the system, whether it's considered basic or unorthodox, the goal of 10th Planet has always been to be the ultimate no gi system. In case you didn't know, MTS is my web show that shows every technique that is taught at HQ, so watch the series before making uneducated statements about 10th Planet, thank you

Yeah I dont know where the idea of 10PJJ just being those couple things could come from. Even in the book about the rubber guard, it has several butterfly guard techniques, and techniques to transition to it from half guard (as well of course half guard techniques and transitions).

Just my 2 cents.. I would say both "traditional" and 10th planet are almost equally important. Ive done BJJ for awhile now but only recently have i started training 10th planet.. But since i have I've learned all sorts of things that have improved my game #1 because of all the new techniques i wasnt learning elsewhere, and #2 because of little details i wasnt learning anywhere else. For instance even in my no-gi classes, when we are taught a specific move, sometimes it can be hard to remember every little step when you're being told "ok, you want to put your hand through here, and then grab your foot here.. where as in 10th planet everything has a name, from double-bag ("just grab your foot here") to zombie ("put your hand here") So i would say that for me personally these things make 10th planet a little easier to remember when it comes to all the steps. But still, i would say 10th planet without traditional is incomplete, just as traditional without 10th planet is incomplete. If you train nothing but 10th planet, and you never come across certain moves found in traditional jj, how will you know what to look for and defend? So it's always good to know as many angles/options as you can. But that goes for anything.. I mean, even when it comes to MMA.. you'll notice when one finds who they are going to be fighting next, they will typically get a training partner around the same size with the same technique as there opponents. Because even if you dont feel that is going to be your strong point, its nice to know your opponents game. So i would say why choose? continue to train both and if you find you can only afford 1 gym.. choose which you feel is your stronger game and train there, but continue to watch videos and keep your skills sharp on the other just to make sure youre always on top of your game. Me personally, I've found 10th planet has worked much better for me. maybe its because not many people know how to defend it because they forced themselves to choose only 1 style? or maybe its because my 10th planet is sharper than my traditional skills..im not sure.. but the only way to find out yourself is to try them both and see what works best for you.

At my school. My instructor is ranked from a Carlson Gracie school but he also teaches wrestling and some techniques in which he says the Gracie system doesn't incorporate. I like how Eddie put it, "Every no gi technique out there that has been proven has been incorporated into the system, whether it's considered basic or unorthodox, the goal of 10th Planet has always been to be the ultimate no gi system." Btw, I rarely train with the GI just for the fact I tore my old coat and haven't ordered a new on yet.

If your instructor is as legit as you say, then it would be a shame for you to pay all that money to go to his gym only to disregard his take on jiujitsu. Sure, maybe he didn't tap Royler but I'm sure he has a lot of great stuff to teach you regardless. I have a friend who's dad was a high school wrestling coach.. mountains of information I can learn from that guy and he's never touched a bare toe on a NAGA mat.

Did your instructor tell you this during open mat or during the tail end of a drill session where things get looser? Some gyms smoothly transition from drills to open mat, where they want you to employ the day's techniques. Other gyms just cut you loose during open mat. The context would kind of explain who was out of line here.. even though ultimately it's your instructor's place and you are either going to have to see eye to eye or train somewhere else.

This was during a free roll i guess since we didn't work any techniques before hand other then show a new guy the basics on passing guard and getting back to guard, I rolled with the new guy and took it easy on him not wanting to be a bully then I rolled with one of the blue belts. I would say more less I think they want me to stop pulling half guard and instead use full and only half for an option if it gets passed. But I don't ever work full guard during free rolling because of my lacking of skill with it. So I rely on butterfly or half seeing as they work a whole lot better for me. I catch my instructor telling me to get back to guard from half over getting a sweep from half. I used to work full guard until I discovered how effective my half was over it.

One great point about the 10th planet system is that while it is a no-gi grappling style, its also perfectly suited for MMA, where 10,000 reps on collar chokes, spider guard, sleeve and pant grips lose their significance, and for survival a fighter on the ground MUST develop a clinching game for defense and control to have a hope for a submission. Rubber guard and the pathways out of it can be so effective with reduced drag due to sweat because they use the bodies' own anatomy to create pinch points. Same with many wrestling and catch wrestling techniques, the greater your squeeze the greater your control and the greater the discomfort for your opponent. No-gi was destined to evolve this way as the possibilities were explored by pioneers like Eddie and techniques incorporated to answer some fundamental needs in wrestling with no handles. I am very grateful to all those researchers out there and especially Eddie for sharing all these techniques, they are very rewarding to experiment with.
