Just my 2 cents.. I would say both "traditional" and 10th planet are almost equally important. Ive done BJJ for awhile now but only recently have i started training 10th planet.. But since i have I've learned all sorts of things that have improved my game #1 because of all the new techniques i wasnt learning elsewhere, and #2 because of little details i wasnt learning anywhere else. For instance even in my no-gi classes, when we are taught a specific move, sometimes it can be hard to remember every little step when you're being told "ok, you want to put your hand through here, and then grab your foot here.. where as in 10th planet everything has a name, from double-bag ("just grab your foot here") to zombie ("put your hand here") So i would say that for me personally these things make 10th planet a little easier to remember when it comes to all the steps. But still, i would say 10th planet without traditional is incomplete, just as traditional without 10th planet is incomplete. If you train nothing but 10th planet, and you never come across certain moves found in traditional jj, how will you know what to look for and defend? So it's always good to know as many angles/options as you can. But that goes for anything.. I mean, even when it comes to MMA.. you'll notice when one finds who they are going to be fighting next, they will typically get a training partner around the same size with the same technique as there opponents. Because even if you dont feel that is going to be your strong point, its nice to know your opponents game. So i would say why choose? continue to train both and if you find you can only afford 1 gym.. choose which you feel is your stronger game and train there, but continue to watch videos and keep your skills sharp on the other just to make sure youre always on top of your game. Me personally, I've found 10th planet has worked much better for me. maybe its because not many people know how to defend it because they forced themselves to choose only 1 style? or maybe its because my 10th planet is sharper than my traditional skills..im not sure.. but the only way to find out yourself is to try them both and see what works best for you.
