For first time, Iowa girl wins a state wrestling match ... by forfeit

This is what the kid who forfeit had to say:

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Megan [Black] and their accomplishments," Northrup said in a statement given to the media following his official forfeit. "However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times.'
"As a matter of conscience and faith, I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other high school sports in Iowa."

I think he should have wrestled her. She probably would rather win for real than because the kid didn't want to wrestle a girl. But he did what he believed was right, so I can't knock him for it.

i wouldnt be able to wrestle a girl. which is weird bc i have no problem grappling one. I guess wrestling just seems more aggressive to me. and trying to physically dominate a female would just feel weird. itd feel like starting a fight with someone smaller than you. (and i dont mean this in a sexist way.. i know there are great girl wrestlers who beat guys all the time, its just going out with the motive to manhandle a female seems weird. whether you accomplish it or not)

I totally understand the sentiment but if everybody wants wrestling to stick around, then making it a co-ed sport is essential for it's survival. Dudes got to step up and take one for the game.

Someone said to me once "See girls that wanna train and/or compete as a problem not a person" since I've been cool to roll with chicks. I just don't consider them as females just other regular people that want to tap me out. Think about it if a chick wants to train or compete well I don't see why going easy on her. It's not doing anybody a favor

Gabby had 2 forfeits this year due to the 'not wanting to wrestle a girl' issue. It sucked for her because as a JV wrestler they only get 7-10 matches a year...so thats 2 less matches she was able to participate in....she was upset...she just wants to put her time in and get experience like everyone else...if there was a womens wrestling team then she would of joined that...but theres now so it was her only choice.

The best part is that since he's in the losers bracket, this exact scenario might come up again. He might have to wrestle a girl again. If he forfeits hes out, this is for states no less. I wonder what he will do.

it's pretty simple folks. A pentecostal young boy doesn't want to be rubbing parts with a woman....for him that it's not appropriate. He knows for himself it would be a sexual interaction...he has always held this belief. It isn't that big...it's the same as the kid that will not kiss a girl in a school play.
