Starting in BJJ and no gi tournaments I would forever pull guard and work whatever game I had been focusing on and I won a bunch of shit with it all working great. Then around 3 years ago I started fighting pro MMA and guard suddenly becomes a bad spot and I go back to more stand up and wrestling stuff and working on my top game finishes.
But being a 6'2" welterweight has its bad points when it comes to wrestling. Yeah my jabs pretty good and I can head kick people from a mile away but when it comes to underhooks and head positon I really struggle to make the cut.
I really a firm believer in Eddie's 3rd option, ie. get a sick ass guard and fuck peoples shit up with it. And its perfect for me. My strikings not bad (had quite a few boxing bouts) but my wrestling sucks and I would say my guards pretty good for MMA purposes. So stand up, punch people in the face, pull guard and sweep or sumbit fools sounds like a great plan to me.
I fought in Sweden in October on the undercard of Hellboy against Niko Musoke who was unbeaten at the time. He had decent stand up and looked strong in the clinch and had never been past the first round of a fight.
So my plan was, use guard to tie him up and let him waste his energy trying to finish me in the 1st. Then second round take him out of his comfort zone and try for the finish.
Im a brown belt in bjj but a white belt in 10th planet, but I play round with rubber guard and stuff. Coach at the Caged Steel Gym near Leeds and make sure everyone knows the basic path and half guard system. Really need to train with Eddie and learn properly. I dont live to far from the 10th planet Grimsby, UK gym so i'm gonna go roll with those guys then plan my trip over I think! Hopefully get some 10th Planet going in the Leeds area!
Anyway, here is the fight, simply as evidence that the 3rd option is a legit way to win a fight, or use as a tool to tire these big fuckers out like I tried here!
