Why are so many jits guys such nerds?

I'm a total nerd, and i'm not even close to alone at my gym. I wonder what it is about jiu jitsu that makes it so appealing to people who love knowing way too much about one subject. Maybe it's because there is so much to know, it appeals to the analytical mind. Maybe because it so closely resembles a video game, where your own body is your controller.

Because it's a physical video game, that changes everytime you play it? Or It's waaay beyond 3D chess with endless applications of both defensive and offensive strategies? This is kind of the way I have always looked at it. That, and it's like the torture game "uncle" that my Dad's brothers used "play" with me growing up

yeah i would say its because of the amount of strategy involved. Its like a real life role playing game. You learn moves to add to your arsenal, and you have to find your opponents weakness and use it against him. It is definitely more mental than physical. There's just SO MUCH to learn. and its a thrill trying to keep a plan in your head while your body attempts to act it out. Thinking about defense while at the same way offense. Its just a great mental challenge. And its one of those games that as soon as you win or lose, you just reset and try again. it never gets old.

When I hear the word nerd I think small weakling. Jiu Jitsu teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger person by using leverage and proper technique. Nerd's aren't going to have sand kicked in their face at the beach anymore!

I concur with pretty much everything above. As a near-pathological dork from way back, I find the analytical and technical aspects of the sport very appealing. It's not all about who is the most athletic. You can be really strong and in very good shape and still get tapped in seconds by someone smaller and/or weaker who knows what they're doing. As a dork who got picked on a lot I think maybe I also like the idea of a nerd choking out the captain of the football team.

I am a large nerd. I like it because it is not i smash u u smash me.
Nerds like real time strategy games and jiu-jitsu is a real time strategy game. Strategy and instant decision making is more important than other aspects.

This is also another reason why most of us also don't go the mma route. You get only one brain and getting hit in the face even lightly during training is unacceptable to someone who wants to keep his wits to his senior years.

One day Stephan Hawking fell off the stairs at the university that he used to work at. HE hits head during the fall and right after he went and took an IQ test to make sure he did not lose any of his genius true story.
