It turns out that ADCC submission wrestling world championships veteran Gabriel Gonzaga will not retire from MMA competition. The heavyweight is reportedly working towards a bout against Parker Porter for Reality Fighting at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
Sherdog reported that the fight is currently in the works. Bout agreements have not been signed and a date has not been set in stone, but the process is moving forward.
After dropping a unanimous decision to Brendan Schaub at UFC 121, Gonzaga received his walking papers from the UFC. On his Twitter account, he claimed that he would only participate in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. However, now he seems intent on taking at least one more MMA fight.
Gonzaga made his UFC debut in 2005. He won his first four fights in the promotion, including a highlight reel knockout of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic at UFC 70, to earn a shot at the UFC title. In his title fight against Randy Couture Gonzaga was stopped in the third round. Since then, Gonzaga has gone 3-4 with victories over Justin McCully and Chris Tuchscherer.
Porter currently holds the Reality Fighting heavyweight championship. The Hartford native currently carries a 5-2 record as a professional. In his last fight, he scored a first-round knockout over Mike Dexter.
