the guard in MMA is just weak. Everywhere I've trained, I always have guys yelling at me for having someone in my guard, but that's where I'm strongest really. Makes me think everyone is teaching that the guard is a bad place to be, but for me it's the most comfortable place. All my subs come off my back or when I'm on my opponents back. So you think these BJJ black belts don't have strong guards? I'm sure they are far more comfortable there than you are. You think they forgot the basic guard submissions and just aren't trying them? Maybe it's something else, haha, like improved quality of defense.
In my opinion, the closed guard in mma has turned into a stalling position. The guy on top feels like he's winning positionally, while the guy on bottom feels like he's defending himself perfectly. I think if the top guy isn't trying to pass and the bottom guy isn't actively working to set up a sub, they should be stood up after 15-20 seconds, as the bottom player has basically done his job if the top guy can't pass or do damage.
