    Arte suave - Marcelo Garcia

Word. Wisdom from the greatest. If you haven't seen this before, check out what he especially says from 3:40- 4:09. Renato would be proud.

How does training with a gi help control the arm of a sweaty opponent? I like the look of the shoulder lock setup at 2.24. Has the other guy got Marcelo in half guard?

Nice video. Marcelo definitely trains more than one day per week without the Gi. The NYC academy has No Gi class 3 of 5 weekdays. http://www.marcelogarciajj.com/schedule.html

i hear you on that PLUS i think a ton of traditional BJJ guys out there are very resistant to saying the gi is anything but the best thing since sliced bread.

BUT, personally, i find the gi has had a really big impact on my posture and movement, the added friction and opponents grabbing my collar forces me to be extra aware of how i move and defend from the top. then when i take off the gi my ability to create space on the bottom and my posture vs submissions is much much better and quicker.

this might not be the case for everyone but i don't think the gi should be completely discredited for nogi training.

I agree. I prefer no-gi but when I took a month or two to do just gi, and then went back to no-gi, the difference was pretty amazing.

I wouldn't shove it down anyone's throat but still...

I believe it really has a lot to do with how you are planning on competing. No GI for MMA makes sense but Jiu Jitsu in general changes once punches are added. I do think that some of the GI guys have amazing control but if you've ever rolled with a top notch wrestler than you truly know what it feels like to be controlled. I just don't understand why everyone is so against No GI. I've rolled with Top Level BJBB with GI and rolled with Eddie and his top guys...and if anyone thinks that they don't understand control just because they don't wear GI's than they really need to head down there and roll with them. They are top Notch and there submissions are faster than any GI guys i've ever rolled with. (except Nino Schembri)

I only think there must be some truth behind what he says because I am pretty sure Marcelo Garcia knows what he's talking about. I've never trained in a gi except no more than a few times rolling but obviously there's a huge difference. Maybe transitioning back and forth between the two realms consistently as he does affects how you roll as an athlete and technically in any given situation. Maybe he just works hard as fuck and that's all it is.

Marcelo said to me recently that he feel the Gi is helpful for No Gi training because the Gi slows things down and allows you to see what is happening and figure out what to do. The No Gi game is much faster and it makes it harder to understand what is happening. That had not occurred to me before he said it.
